PLN Presentation 2 Evaluation

I think I did alright on my second Presentation. I was more prepared than I was last time but I still think I need to speak up when I am presenting. I also could have probably made it a little bit longer but overall I think I did a pretty good job.

Today I read an article from "The Denver Post" about a shooting at the New Life Church in Colorado Springs. A man dressed in all black walked into the church at about one o'clock this afternoon with a rifle. At least four people were shot and their conditions are unknown at this point.

I think it is amazing that even at churches there is violence. As I was looking for an article, five of the top eight stories in "The Denver Post" were about shootings. It seems like violence is a growing problem in our society. People hold in their anger and then take it out on innocent people. There was also a shooting at a Missionary Training Center in Arvada this morning. Somehow we need to find a way to make public areas safer for people. It is so sad that people have to feel unsafe in places that you would think would give them comfort.

This article relates to me because, just Friday, there was an armed bank robbery right near our school. This is also an act of violence that puts many people in danger. It affected everyone in the school although no one was hurt by the robber. This relates to the world because there are shootings and violent situations that occur everywhere in the world on a regular basis.

An article from "The Rocky Mountain News" talked about snow hitting the mountains last night. The National Weather Service reported 17 inches of snow fallen at Berthoud Pass, 14 near Georgetown, and 10.5 in Winter Park.

This is good for all of Colorado because it will bring tourists to the mountains and that is a relief for most businesses. There hasn't been a lot of snow so I'm sure everyone in the mountains is excited. I think it is great that it is finally starting to get cold and snow after this warm winter. I love the snow and can't wait to go skiing. This article relates to me because once more snow falls I will probably go up skiing a lot. I love to ski so it is good news that the mountains are finally getting snow. This article relates to the world because the mountains bring people from all over to Colorado. When it snows, people want to come here to ski and they spend money and help out our economy.

Today I read an article from "The Denver Post" about a couple who are suing the Fort Collins Police Department for damaging their confiscated marijuana plants. The police seized over three dozen plants from the couple because they didn’t have a permit for the plants. The couple says that the plants were for medical purposes and they just didn't have money to pay for the permit at the time. They did receive a certificate for possessing the plants shortly after they got out of jail.

This article is interesting to me because the couple is acting like they needed the plants. The police should have the right to destroy or get rid of the confiscated plants if they want to, they are, after all, illegal. I think the couple should not have the marijuana returned to them after they get out of jail because, whether they have a permit now or not, they didn't have one when the police took the illegal plants.

This article relates to me because it is pretty close to where I live and I think it is interesting that the people are mad at the police after they broke the law. People should not be allowed to get marijuana back that was confiscated from them. It relates to the world because people should know the laws and follow them. It doesn't matter if you are about to be following the law, if you break it at the present time, there should be consequences.

PLN 23

This morning I read an article from "The Denver Post" about a scientist who discovered many different fossils just outside of Denver. Kirk Johnson was looking at sandstone about an hour east of Denver when he discovered fossils of plants, estimated about 65 million years old. These fossils tell a lot about what the climate was like millions of years ago and how it has changed.

This article relates to me because this story is just outside of Denver. I think it is cool that there is so much to learn about the earth in things as simple as rocks. These discoveries will probably go to the Denver museums and be further researched. It is really cool to me that so much history can be found right in your own back yard.

This article relates to the world because these discoveries and other like them can help us to know what the climate and weather was like millions of years ago. They can also help us to see how the climate has changed over the years. This knowledge could tell us a lot about how the climate could keep changing in years to come. If we knew that the climate would change we could do things to start preparing for it or to try to prevent it. Although it is unlikely, this little discovery could eventually impact the whole world.
